As stated in the district's Chromebook Policy (Policy #5050), "Students and their parents/guardians should be aware that use of district technology tools, resources, and services is subject to reasonable and appropriate monitoring by the District and school administration in accordance with the requirements of all applicable federal and state laws."
The Smithfield Public Schools utilizes a Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) compliant web filtering service to ensure compliance with federal and state laws, as well as local policies. The district is currently utilizing web filtering services provided by iBoss through our internet service provider, OSHEAN.
The district is not currently utilizing the SSL decryption feature of the iBoss web filter. We explored it's use with students in early 2017, but it caused technical issues with online services and resources that are important for teaching and learning. We do not have any future plans to re-enable the SSL decryption feature.
